Mollusks

Picture
Snails!

There are thousand of species!
They live on land and in lakes and rivers and the sea! They even climb trees! (albeit rather slowly.) What sets them apart from other mollusks is their coiled shell that is large enough for them to fully retreat into for safety ...or naps. I adore the movement of these little guys and enjoy their addition to game with Cataclysm.  Land snails have some fun shapes, but the sea snails really went all out. Many of the shells you pick up on the beach (if they are a spiral,) are sea snails and there is a brilliant variety of shapes and colors. There is a lot of room for expansion here for the game. There is even the Cone Snail (Genus Conus), which is a predatory sea snail that have a hypodermic-like modified radula tooth attached to a venom gland used to attack and paralyze their prey. If that doesn't have "hunter pet" written all over it give me fine minutes and a sharpie.

Octopus

There are about 300 species of Octopi and they are, of course, strictly aquatic. Their skin can change to a vast array of colors and their ability to camouflage is superb. They are quite strong and are the most intelligent of the invertebrates. They also rate up there with crows an pigs. They have been seen to use tools, find their way through mazes and complete puzzles. The ones in game are not quite that proficient, but give it time. There is wonderful opportunity for expansion - and maybe a kick ass raid boss sometime in the future.

The ones in-game remind me of the Dalek-Human Hybrid from Doctor Who.

Clams

Picture
Also called bivalves, there are over 9,000 species. Many of them are tasty. They include clams, oysters, mussels, scallops and are exclusively aquatic. Aside from snails these are the other shells you'd collect at the beach. While  some locomotion is possible, its is awkwardly done using jets of water, so this might be the first animal where I don't necessarily recommend them as mounts.

Starfish

Picture
There are about 1800 species of these ocean floor dwelling echinoderms. Sea urchins are in the same family.  They also have a small about of locomotion, but it is slow. It is kind of cool to watch their hundreds of little sucker feet grip and release to move them around. I recommend visiting them at touch tanks at your local aquarium and experience it yourself! As long as you handle them carefully and respectfully.

I'm waiting to see these as battle pets. And again, not going to necessarily recommend them as in-game mounts.
